About this place
Taipei Tianhou Temple, commonly known as "Ximending Mazu Temple", together with Menga Longshan Temple and Menga Patriarch Temple, were known as the three major temples in Taiwan during the Qing Dynasty. As soon as you step into the temple gate, the noisy pop music and loud voices in your ears disappear instantly, replaced by the lingering scent of sandalwood and a solemn and peaceful atmosphere. The unique feature of this temple is that it is the only place in Taiwan where "Taiwanese and Japanese gods and Buddhas are worshiped together". The main hall is dedicated to Mazu, the merciful heavenly Virgin Mother, who protects tourists and merchants. The side hall is dedicated to Kobo Daishi, the founder of the Japanese Shingon sect. Every year, monks from Mount Koya, Japan come here to hold Dharma ceremonies, and it also attracts countless Japanese tourists to come for pilgrimage. In addition, the temple has thoughtfully set up a small area with tables, chairs and restrooms in the hall, so that tourists who are tired of shopping in Ximending or have urgent needs can take a break and tidy up here. You might as well visit the shops around Chengdu Road after praying for blessings and getting some respite.
