About this place
In 1938, in order to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its founding, "Taiwan Daily News" donated its 4-inch refractor equatorial telescope and dome observation platform built on the roof of the public hall to the Taipei City Hall. In the 34th year of the Republic of China (1945 AD), the Public Hall was taken over by the city government and was renamed Zhongshan Hall. This was the earliest predecessor of the Taipei Municipal Astronomy Science Education Center. Afterwards, human culture entered the space age, and society had a strong demand for astronomical knowledge. Because the light pollution near Zhongshan Hall was severe at night, it was not suitable for observation work. Therefore, after planning, it was decided to locate the observatory in the Yuanshan Scenic Area. It was opened in 1963, and a planetarium was built in 1978. Later, due to the rapid increase in the population of Taipei City, the original observatory was too small to be used. So preparations began for the planetarium now located on Jihe Road.
